20 Years of Bridging Communities: The Green Line Regulation in Cyprus
Today, the European Commission commemorates a significant milestone—the 20th anniversary of the EU regulation on the Green Line in Cyprus. This landmark regulation has been pivotal in facilitating movement and fostering trust between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, setting a foundation for potential reunification.
Over 64 million crossings have occurred since 2004, illustrating the profound impact of the regulation on daily life. The reasons for crossing are manifold, ranging from social visits to economic activities. Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots traverse the Green Line to reconnect with friends, engage in commerce, or explore cultural sites, effectively weaving a tapestry of shared experiences.
Trade has flourished under this framework, with businesses frequently crossing to collaborate with partners. Turkish Cypriots also cross to work and study, further integrating the communities. The regulation not only supports social interaction but also underpins economic exchanges, particularly from the northern part of the island to the government-controlled areas within the EU single market.
The European Commission has been proactive in enhancing trade, with transactions soaring to €16 million in 2023. In a bid to sustain this growth, a new €4 million support programme was introduced in April 2024, offering financial aid and technical assistance to Turkish Cypriot SMEs. This initiative aims to help these enterprises meet EU standards, a prerequisite for accessing the vast EU market.
Addressing the need for guidance, the Commission unveiled the “EU One-Stop Shop for Trade Support across the Green Line and Businesses” in Nicosia in November 2023. This facility serves as a hub for information and support, aiding producers and traders from both communities in navigating the intricacies of cross-Green Line commerce.
The Green Line regulation has undeniably become a cornerstone of community interaction and economic cooperation in Cyprus. As it enters its third decade, the enduring hope is that it will continue to bridge divides and contribute to a harmonious future for all Cypriots.
