Addressing the Congestion at Ayios Dhometios
The issue of congestion at crossing points between the northern and southern parts of Cyprus has been a topic of contention, with the north’s ‘foreign ministry’ attributing the blame to the Greek Cypriot side. Recent weeks have seen increased delays at the Ayios Dhometios crossing, with the north claiming that these are due to deficiencies on the part of the Greek Cypriots. In response, they have taken the initiative to propose solutions and implement improvements.
Efforts to alleviate the congestion have been proactive on the northern side, with a road-widening project at Ayios Dhometios already underway. This project aims to facilitate smoother crossings for both communities, promising a modernized environment free from unnecessary delays. Despite these efforts, the southern government has expressed that they were not approached regarding these upgrades, with Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades stating a lack of communication on the matter.
The north has also proposed the creation of a new crossing point at Mia Milia, specifically for commercial vehicles, which they believe would ease the traffic at Ayios Dhometios and boost intra-island trade. However, this suggestion was reportedly rejected by the Greek Cypriot side, with concerns that it would disproportionately benefit the Turkish Cypriot community.
Further complicating matters is the consideration of opening additional crossing points. The north’s ‘transport minister’ Erhan Arikli has indicated that such an endeavor would currently be infeasible due to staffing shortages at both Ercan airport and existing crossing points. A significant increase in personnel would be necessary to manage new openings effectively.
As discussions continue, both sides are seeking ways to address the pressing issue of congestion at crossing points. The north remains firm in its stance that responsibility for the current state of affairs at Ayios Dhometios lies with the Greek Cypriot administration, while also acknowledging internal challenges that must be overcome to ensure efficient and effective border management.
