Police Investigate Youth Involvement in Kiti Fire Setting Incident
In a recent development that has shaken the small community of Kiti, the Larnaca district court has taken action against three teenagers following a series of events that culminated in fire setting and vandalism. The court’s decision to issue a one-day remand is part of ongoing police investigations into the incident that occurred on May 4th, involving a group of approximately 70 individuals.
The evening’s chaos began when the group set fire to a woodpile, inadvertently causing the flames to spread to nearby cypress trees. The Fire Service was promptly called to the scene to extinguish the growing blaze, while police officers managed traffic flow and secured space for emergency operations.
The situation escalated when the three teenagers, two aged 14 and one aged 16, were observed engaging in particularly reckless behavior. According to the police statement, they were throwing firecrackers at police officers and into the residence of a 73-year-old local man. Their actions led to a large fire within the man’s yard and pergola, and they also hurled rocks at his windows before fleeing as police arrived.
Despite police intervention, the teenagers returned to the scene later that night, resuming their destructive actions by throwing rocks at house windows. The police faced challenges in pursuing the youths once again when called to intervene.
Subsequent to these events, four individuals were arrested under judicial warrants on Monday. One of the 16-year-olds was released due to insufficient evidence linking him to the scene. However, the remaining three faced the district court and were remanded for further questioning.
The community of Kiti and local authorities are now grappling with the aftermath of this incident, which has highlighted concerns over youth delinquency and public safety. The police continue their efforts to fully unravel the circumstances of that night and prevent future occurrences of such disruptive behavior.
