Government Readies Subsidies for Elderly in Nursing Homes

Government Announces Elderly Care Subsidies and National Strategy

In a significant move to support the aging population, Deputy Welfare Minister Marilena Evangelou has unveiled the government’s plan to offer subsidies for elderly individuals requiring long-term care in nursing homes. Addressing the House Labour Committee, Evangelou detailed the scheme designed to aid senior citizens struggling with the financial demands of long-term care. This initiative is particularly inclusive, extending its benefits to those not in receipt of state pensions.

The forthcoming subsidy program is not just about financial assistance; it also sets mandatory quality standards for nursing homes to qualify for participation. This ensures that elderly residents receive the highest level of care. Alongside this, Evangelou shed light on the broader national strategy for the elderly, which is nearing completion. This strategy is a collaborative effort involving 11 ministries and deputy ministries, focusing on social inclusion, promoting healthy aging, and addressing diversity and inequalities.

Another innovative aspect of the government’s elderly care initiatives is the Red Button initiative. This emergency assistance program equips seniors with a bracelet that can be used to call for help in urgent situations. The Subcommittee of the Third Age Observatory is putting the finishing touches on this proposal.

Evangelou also highlighted recent enhancements to pensioners’ benefits, including a 5% increase in allowances and an expansion of defined income limits. The government has taken steps to ensure that pension increases do not negatively impact low-pension recipients by absorbing additional costs. Moreover, a temporary financial boost has been provided to low-pension households, with a one-time assistance of €100 for three months and an increased Easter allowance.

The Deputy Welfare Minister concluded by mentioning the ongoing efforts to overhaul the subsidy policy in collaboration with the finance ministry. This initiative is part of President Christodoulides’ Governance Programme and aims to modernize social allowances to better meet current needs and challenges, while correcting any existing policy distortions.
