PestSeaCides Project Tackles Marine Pesticide Pollution in Cyprus

15 May 2024

Unveiling the Impact of Pesticides on Cyprus’s Marine Environment

In a groundbreaking study, researchers from Enalia Physis Environmental Research Centre, alongside Dr. Ime Akanyeti and Dr. Beste Oymen, have launched the EU-funded PestSeaCides project. This initiative is the first of its kind to delve into the effects of terrestrial-used pesticides on the marine environment of Cyprus. The team is set to explore various pesticide types in selected coastal areas, aiming to uncover their pathways from land to sea.

The project’s objectives are multifaceted: understanding pesticide transportation into the marine environment, assessing the current state of pesticide pollution, pushing for robust EU-compliant legislation, filling the knowledge void for stakeholders, and reshaping public perception through education. Moreover, it seeks to disseminate scientific insights and spark interest within the scientific community regarding this pressing issue.

Pesticides, while crucial in agriculture and public health, carry potential risks including cancer and neurological damage. In Cyprus, concerns have been raised due to high exceedance rates of Maximum Residue Levels (MRLs) in food and animal feeds, with instances of non-approved pesticides detected in EU-grown produce.

The urgency to investigate pesticides in aquatic settings is underscored by EU reports revealing pesticide residues in fish, with no established MRLs for these species under Regulation (EC) No 396/2005. The toxicity of these chemicals poses a threat not only to marine life but also to humans through dietary intake.

Despite the benefits of pesticides in enhancing crop production and controlling disease vectors, there is a pressing need for consumers to mitigate exposure risks. Recommendations include informed purchasing decisions, thorough cooking, and peeling of produce, and choosing items with lower pesticide residues.

With the support of the European Union, this research spearheaded by Christiana Tourapi and her colleagues at Enalia Physis Environmental Research Centre is poised to make significant strides in combating pollution and safeguarding both marine ecosystems and public health.
