Police Arrival Aids Calm as Riots Lead to Road Blocks in New Caledonia

Unrest in New Caledonia: Protests, Road Blocks, and Police Arrival

In the wake of a week filled with riots and civil unrest, the French High Commission has reported a significant police presence in New Caledonia, with a thousand officers arriving from France to restore order. Despite the increased security, the situation remains tense as road blocks persist and the international airport is closed, leaving tourists stranded on the Pacific island.

The Field Action Co-ordination Cell (CCAT), the activist group behind the protests, has called for the continuation of blockades but emphasized the need for peaceful methods. The road blocks have severely disrupted the supply chain, making it challenging to deliver food to stores and ensure safe passage for medical personnel. The New Caledonia government highlighted that the core issue is access rather than a shortage of supplies or staff.

Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed deep concern over the situation, particularly following incidents of fire and looting. Louis Le Franc, France’s top official in the territory, indicated that reestablishing control over the road from Noumea to the international airport could take days. The High Commission announced that 76 road blocks had been dismantled by Monday.

Meanwhile, Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles disclosed ongoing discussions with French authorities regarding potential assistance from Australia, including an airlift operation. Approximately 300 Australians have sought consular assistance in New Caledonia, which is situated near Australia in the southwest Pacific.

As commercial flights remain grounded due to the unrest, around 3,200 individuals are waiting to either leave or enter New Caledonia. New Zealand’s Foreign Minister Winston Peters also indicated that defense aircraft from his country are ready to assist once French approval is granted.

The protests were triggered by a constitutional amendment passed in France, which indigenous Kanak people fear will weaken their electoral influence. The violence has resulted in six fatalities and extensive property damage, including 150 businesses that have been looted and burned. Pro-independence political factions are demanding the withdrawal of the electoral reform as a precondition for resuming dialogue with the French government.

The protests in New Caledonia were ignited by opposition to a proposed sale of the Vale nickel plant to a new ownership consortium, raising concerns over job security and environmental issues.
