Delays in Paphos-Polis Chrysochous Road Project Raise Concerns
The Paphos Chamber of Commerce and Industry is deeply concerned about the delays affecting the first phase of the Paphos-Polis Chrysochous road construction project. With the region’s economic development at stake, George Mais, the president of the Chamber, is urgently seeking a resolution to the issues that have arisen between the involved parties.
During a recent site meeting with the House Transport Committee, it was disclosed that the project is alarmingly behind schedule. The Director of Public Works reported that only 30% of the work has been completed, and the contractor has requested a 33-month extension. This significant delay puts the originally planned completion date of November in jeopardy for the €75 million project.
Mais highlighted the financial and technical challenges plaguing the project, stressing the importance of finding a swift resolution. He called upon both the Minister of Transport and the contractor to engage in constructive negotiations to overcome these hurdles.
As for the second phase of the road project, which extends from Stroubi to Polis Chrysochous, the Chamber is adamant that it should not be affected by delays in the first phase. To ensure progress, the Chamber has suggested splitting the second phase into two parts, commencing construction from Polis Chrysochous towards Stroubi. This strategy could potentially allow for more time to resolve environmental concerns in the Skoulli area.
The Minister of Transport has responded to these concerns by assuring that all options will be considered to keep the project on track. Meanwhile, Mais has made it clear that the Chamber will remain vigilant, monitoring developments and timelines closely. The Chamber refuses to accept any further delays or objections that could impede this essential infrastructure development for the Paphos region.
