A New Star in Cyprus: Troodos Astronomical Observatory Opens
In the serene mountainous landscape of Agridia, a new beacon for stargazers and tourists alike has emerged with the official unveiling of the Troodos astronomical observatory. The forestry department, with senior officer Christodoulos Christodoulou at the helm, inaugurated the facility, which stands as a testament to the potential of alternative tourism in revitalizing rural areas.
Christodoulou highlighted that the observatory is not just a local initiative but the culmination of an ambitious EU project known as ‘Geostars’. This project, with a substantial budget of €2,678,400, has been a collaborative effort between Cyprus and Greece to foster astro-tourism and related activities. The European Union has played a significant role, funding 85 percent of the observatory’s cost.
Since its inception in June 2018, ‘Geostars’ has worked towards enhancing astro-observation infrastructures across both nations. The partnership network is extensive, featuring Cypriot entities such as the forestry department, the Troodos area communities’ development company, and the University of Nicosia. Greek collaborators include the municipality of Sitia and the University of Crete.
The observatory is just one piece of the astro-tourism puzzle. The project has also seen the creation of an outdoor astro-observation area in Troodos National Forest Park, the establishment of Sitia Astro-school in Greece, and upgrades to the Skinakas Observatory. These developments are poised to offer visitors unique experiences under the stars while fostering local economies.
Christodoulou emphasized that this initiative goes beyond economic benefits. Astro-tourism represents an alternative tourism avenue that can contribute significantly to environmental education and ecological conservation. By drawing visitors to Cyprus’s mountainous regions, the project aims to support community development and showcase the natural beauty of the night sky.
