Alphabet-owned Google is set to inject an additional 1 billion euros ($1.1 billion) into the expansion of its data centre campus in Finland, a strategic move aimed at bolstering its artificial intelligence (AI) business growth across Europe. The Nordic region has become a magnet for data centres, thanks to its cooler climate, tax incentives, and abundant availability of renewable power.
Renewable Power Availability
While Finland’s Nordic neighbours, Sweden and Norway, have recently voiced concerns about hosting data centres, arguing that their renewable power should be used for high-value products like green steel, Finland has taken a different approach. The country’s wind power capacity surged by 75 percent to 5,677 megawatts in 2022 alone, leading to instances where electricity prices dipped into the negative on particularly windy days. This surplus of renewable energy makes Finland an attractive location for data centres like Google’s, which secures wind power through long-term contracts.
Google’s Hamina data centre already operates with 97 percent carbon-free energy and is set to play a crucial role in the company’s ambitious goal to achieve net zero emissions across all its operations and value chain by 2030. The tech giant also plans to re-route excess heat from its Finnish data centre to the district heating network in nearby Hamina, providing warmth to local households, schools, and public service buildings.
Artificial Intelligence Growth
The rapid growth in AI usage is expected to significantly increase the power consumption of data centres. This trend is one of the key drivers behind Google’s latest investment decision. Analysts predict that as AI applications become more prevalent, the demand for robust and energy-efficient data centres will continue to rise.
In addition to its substantial investment in Finland, Google announced last month that it would be expanding its data centre footprint in Europe by constructing new facilities in the Netherlands and Belgium. These expansions are part of Google’s broader strategy to support its growing cloud services and AI capabilities while adhering to stringent sustainability goals.
With this latest investment, Google not only reinforces its commitment to sustainable growth but also positions itself at the forefront of the AI revolution in Europe.
