Expansion of Free Compulsory Pre-Primary Education in Cyprus
In a landmark decision, the Cypriot House of Representatives has passed the 2024 Amendment Law on Primary and Secondary Education, which includes a significant reform in the education system. The law introduces the gradual extension of free compulsory pre-primary education starting from the age of four, a move that is expected to have profound implications for the country’s educational landscape.
The Ministry of Education, Sports, and Youth has highlighted the importance of this legislative amendment, stating that it is a “milestone in the history of Cypriot education.” The ministry’s announcement emphasized the pedagogical and societal benefits that two years of compulsory pre-primary education can bring. Among these benefits are improved learning outcomes, early detection and intervention in literacy challenges, and a reduction in violence and delinquency issues.
Moreover, this reform aims to provide equal access opportunities to quality educational programs for all children. It also supports parents and guardians by facilitating their integration or reintegration into the labor market, as their young ones receive structured early education.
With the implementation of this legislative amendment, registrations for the new academic year 2024-2025 will commence soon. Parents and guardians of children aged between 4 years 6 months and 4 years 8 months, specifically those born between January 1st and February 29th, 2020, are eligible to register their children in Public and Community Kindergartens. The registration period is set from March 28th to April 2nd, 2024, aligning with the existing registration process for older children.
To facilitate a smooth registration and transfer process, the ministry urges affected parents and guardians to adhere to the guidelines provided. These guidelines are available in a document written in Greek, ensuring that all necessary information is accessible to those who need it.
This development in Cyprus’s education policy not only aligns with international research on early childhood education but also represents a progressive step towards nurturing future generations. The extension of compulsory pre-primary education is poised to lay a stronger foundation for children’s academic journey and overall well-being.
